TV SPECIAL
In July 1983 in Montreal, Quebec, Canada producer Frank Duval was preparing a special about Celine Dion for the Radio-Canada channel in Quebec, the French-language public television network. The show was called "La Naissance D´une Étoile" (meaning "A Star Is Born"). It was the first real portrait of the young singer. Duval filmed her in the studio, onstage, with her family. He met the important people in her life. To illustrate "D´amour ou d´amitié" he used a very charming dramatization. Celine was shown sitting in a Porsche next to hockey player Gilbert Delorme from the Montreal Canadiens team, whom she called "meltingly cute". As they drove down a country road, she was to lean her head on his shoulder. After the filming was done, she asked her manager Rene Angelil to set up a rendez-vous with the handsome stickhandler. For several days, she dreamed of him, and talked only about him to her sisters and mother. The date never took place. Either Rene never passed the message on to Delorme, or Delorme declined the invitation. The TV special featured interviews with Celine, her sister Claudette, her parents Adhémar and Thérèse, Celine´s manager Rene Angelil and even with French songwriter Eddy Marnay. During the shooting, the cameras followed Celine everywhere during the whole year. In reference to this TV special, Celine has said "Rene wanted the audience of Radio Canada to see me and hear me as well. So he pestered the producers and programmers of public television until they agreed to produce a special broadcast, a kind of portrait of me, which they were contracted to air during prime time. For days they followed me everywhere, right into the kitchen of our house in Pointe-aux-Trembles and into my bedroom. They even included shots of Paris. Interviews with Papa and Maman, with Eddy, with my musicians and technicians, with Rene, obviously, who said in front of the Radio Canada cameras that one day I´d be the greatest singer in the world" (from an extract of the book "My Story, My Dream").
