POPE JOHN PAUL II´S VISIT
On September 11, 1984 Celine Dion performed the song "Une colombe" if front of 65,000 people at the Olympic Stadium in Montreal, Quebec, Canada as a tribute to Pope John Paul II´s visit in Canada. Celine was asked to perform for the Pope to represent the children of Quebec. Dressed all in white, her long hair cascading down her back, in front of the Pope and sixty thousand people waving white handkerchiefs, Celine sang "Une colombe". "It was a such a big thing for me, it felt as much as if I were going to meet God", Celine had said. "Does this mean that something miraculous would happen? I got my curiosity tremendously. I thought, this is a close to heaven as I´m going to be during life". After the perfomance, Celine met the Pope and he talked to her. For the occasion, Paul Baillargeon composed the special song "Une colombe" ("A dove" in English) with words by Marcel Lefebvre, a hymn to worldwide peace and love. They were looking for a performer to represent Quebec youth. Rene Simard was mentioned, then Martine Saint-Clair and certain Martine Chervier. Celine´s manager Rene Angelil was in Paris, France when he heard that Celine had been chosen to sing the song at the Olympic Stadium. Inwardly, he was jubilant. Outwardly, he remained composed and asked to hear Baillargeon and Lefebvre´s song. A few days later he accepted on his singer´s behalf, saying it was "an honour to be invited to sing for the Pope". In reference to this event, Celine has said "It was the end of the afternoon on a windy, rainy day. An hour before the ceremonies, the weather forecasters predicted the worst. But when the emcee, Michel Jasmin, who´d had me on his talk show the first time I appeared on TV, stepped up to the podium, the sky suddenly changed. A gust of wind chased away the clouds. And at the very moment when Michel said my name, sunlight filled the stadium. Before I even opened my mouth, the crowd began to shout and applaud. While I sang Une colombe, a song written for the occasion, two thousand young people in the stadium held up white banners, forming a giant dove that slowly flapped its wings. It was magnificent, truly grand, deeply moving. I finished my song, weeping heavily because of the glaring sun, because of the pope, the dove, and the crowd" (from an extract of the book "My Story, My Dream"). After that appearance, Celine´s career took a giant step forward.
