THE ALBUM
"A New Day Has Come" is Celine Dion´s 18 studio album which marked her return after two-year hiatus to have a child. It was released on March 22, 2002. "A New Day Has Come" is Celine´s 9th English album and 28th in total. The limited edition, containing bonus DVD with two audio and two video tracks, was released in November 2002. A special edition "Let´s Talk About Love / Falling into You / A New Day Has Come 3CD set" was released in October 2007. Later, it was repacked and released in a reusable gift box on September 29, 2009, titled "The Collection". Also on October 2, 2009 "Let´s Talk About Love / A New Day Has Come 2CD set" was released.

The album includes many highlights, like Celine´s renditions of Etta James classic, "At last" and Nat King Cole´s "Nature boy". Few French accents can be found here too, as Celine recorded "The greatest reward", an adaptation of "L´envie d´aimer" from the French musical The Ten Commandments, performed originally by Daniel Lévi. The song was co-written by Pascal Obispo, a popular French singer and composer. Another track called "Ten days" is an adaptation of a French hit song, "Tomber" by Gérald De Palmas. Celine recorded also a Spanish version of "L´amour existe encore" from her 1991 "Dion Chante Plamondon" album, called "Aún existe amor". The album included two successful singles: the title track and "I´m alive", featured also in the "Stuart Little 2" movie. On "Goodbye´s (The saddest word)", released as the last commercial single, Shania Twain did the background vocals. "At last" was released as a radio single in the United States only. "Super love" was available as a bonus track outside North America. Jean Renard, famous composer of all the Mike Brant´s tubes, announced, in the french newspaper "Le Parisien" (on December 7, 2001): "Celine is going to record the tube written for Mike Brant, "Laisse moi t´aimer". It would be about an English version. The song was not finally kept for the final choice. On April 7, 2002, CBS channel aired one-hour TV special dedicated to "A New Day Has Come". Beside songs from the album, Celine performed two duets: "Emotion/When the wrong one loves you right" with Destiny´s Child and "Beauty and the beast" with Brian McKnight. For further promotion, Celine joined on May 23, 2002 the "VH1 Divas Las Vegas" concert along with Cher, Shakira, Mary J. Blige, Anastacia, Dixie Chicks, Cyndi Lauper, Stevie Nicks and Whitney Houston. She sang "A new day has come", "I´m alive", "Can´t help falling in love", and a duet with Anastacia on AC/DC song "You shook me all night long". On November 18, 2002 "A New Day Has Come" was released as a special limited edition with bonus DVD, featuring two unreleased audio tracks: "Coulda woulda shoulda" and "All because of you", the music video for "I´m alive" and a teaser for Celine´s Las Vegas show "A New Day...". In the U.S., limited edition included longer version of "The greatest reward" lasting 4:04, instead of original 3:28. After this re-release the album made a big jump on the charts around the world. "All because of you" was later released as "Goodbye´s (The saddest word)" B-side. As well as a ballad version of "Sorry for love", which is actually the original version of said song, "Coulda woulda shoulda" and "Have you ever been in love" were re-included on Celine´s next album "One Heart". "Have you ever been in love" was then released from that album as a single in 2003. Celine won an American Music Award for Favorite Artist in the Adult Contemporary category in February 2003. The track "I surrender", while not released as a single, has become a popular song choice for contestants on reality TV singing competitions around the world. It has been performed by Kelly Clarkson, Anthony Fedorov and Lil Rounds on "American Idol", David Archuleta on "Star Search", Craig Sharpe on "Canadian Idol", and Lorena Gomez on "Operación Triunfo" to name a few. In 2004 British singer Nicki French released a dance version of the song. Polish singer Edyta Górniak recorded Polish-language version of this song, called "List". "I surrender" was also performed by Celine for five years during "A New Day...", becoming one of show´s highlights. On January 29, 2008, Legacy Recordings released "A New Day Has Come" as a new collector´s edition with bonus DVD. The CD contains 16 tracks from the North American version of the album (including extended version of "The greatest reward") and the DVD features four music videos, and behind the scenes footage from the making of the album and the "A new day has come" video.

...> Recording Sessions
The recording sessions of "A New Day Has Come" started on August 28, 2001 at the Studios Piccolo in Montreal, Canada. Behind the scenes footage from the recording sessions of the album can be found on the collector´s edition bonus DVD of "A New Day Has Come". The DVD contains footage from Celine recording the songs "A new day has come", "Have you ever been in love", "Ten days" and "I´m alive".

On December 20, 2001, Celine Dion ended a first photo session for the "A New Day Has Come" album. The photo session took place in Montreal, Canada with noted New York City photographer Melvin Sokolsky. And, after much discussion, in late December 2001, Melvin Sokolsky shot a montage of Celine Dion where several different angles of her face convey various emotions. Apparently, at the end, these pictures were not used for the album as Sokolsky´s name does not appear inside the booklet.
And finally on January, 30 and 31, 2002 an additional photo session for the album took place in Florida, USA on a beach near Celine´s ex-house in Jupiter. The photographer of this new photo session was Patrick Demarchelier. Celine´s hair was done by Oribe Canales and her make-up was done by Mally Roncal. The current album cover comes from this session. Anyway, the booklet of the album doesn´t includes photos from the photo session, except the album cover. The booklet of the album contains a collage of familiar photos of Celine with her husband Rene Angelil and their son, Rene Charles. Aditionally, photographer Andre Rau made a photo session with Celine for the "A New Day Has Come" album. Many photos from this session were used for promotion only. Behind the scenes footage from the photo sessions of the album can be found on the collector´s edition bonus DVD of "A New Day Has Come".

The title of the album, "A New Day Has Come", is not deprived of sense. "It represents my child, because I gave life, and it is beautiful". Celine says. "Obviously, it also marks my return with a new album. But a new day has also come in the lives of other people because something bad has happened, (the events of September 11, 2001 in USA) because we´ve lost lives, because there´s a scar on our world now". Celine struggled over for the cover of the album, feeling that a portrait reflecting her good fortune was in poor taste after the events of September 11, 2001. Celine suggested to Sony Music that the album cover not include her picture. However a photo of Celine was used. About the cover, here is the first version of the album cover finally aired on Internet by Sony Music in early 2002:

"A New Day Has Come" was very successful, debuting at number 1 in over twenty countries and selling over 12 million copies worldwide. The IFPI announced that it was the fifth best selling album in 2002 around the world. In the United States, "A New Day Has Come" debuted at number 1, selling 558,000 copies in its first week. It was Celine´s first number 1 debut in the U.S., and her fourth number 1 overall. In the following week, "A New Day Has Come" has sold 263,000 copies and slipped to number 2. According to Nielsen SoundScan, the album has sold 3,307,000 copies in the U.S. and was certified 3x platinum by the RIAA. In Canada, it debuted at number 1 with 152,000 copies sold in the first week and stayed at number 1 for seven consecutive weeks. It was certified 6x platinum. After selling over 3 million copies in Europe and spending 7 weeks at number 1 on the European Top 100 Albums, "A New Day Has Come" was certified 3x platinum by the IFPI. It reached number 1 in most European countries. In the United Kingdom, the album debuted at the top with 89,000 copies sold and stayed at number 1 for four weeks in a row. It was certified platinum. "A New Day Has Come" entered also at number 1 in France and stayed there for four non-consecutive weeks. Later it was certified 3x platinum. In Australia, "A New Day Has Come" entered the chart at the top and stayed there for five non-consecutive weeks. After selling 160,000 copies, it was certified 2x platinum. In Hong Kong, "A New Day Has Come" became the 9th best selling foreign album in 2002.

THE SINGLES
...> "A new day has come"
"A new day has come" is the lead single from the album "A New Day Has Come", released on March 11, 2002.
The song was written by Aldo Nova and Stephan Moccio and produced by Walter Afanasieff and Nova as a piano-driven ballad in 6/8 time. However, the midtempo radio remix co-produced by Ric Wake was released as the lead track. Both versions are included on the album. The single was very successful around the world. On the U.S. Hot Adult Contemporary Tracks, the song broke the record for most weeks at number 1: it stayed on top twenty-one weeks. The previous record holders were Phil Collins´ "You´ll be in my heart" and Celine´s own "Because you loved me", both of which lasted nineteen weeks at number 1. However, as of today, the record has been surpassed, as "Drift away" by Uncle Kracker featuring Dobie Gray remained twenty-eight weeks at number 1 in 2004. Ironically, it was Celine who almost took the crown from "Drift away", but "Have you ever been in love" stopped at number 2 for fourteen weeks, which is another record. In the U.S., the single appeared on the Billboard Hot 100 because of airplay only, reaching number 22 (also number 22 on the Billboard Hot 100 Airplay). The DVD single was released four months later in the U.S., peaking at number 11 on the Top Music Video and number 16 on the Hot 100 Singles Sales. It has sold 45,000 copies and was certified gold. "A new day has come" CD single was also certified gold in Australia (35,000), Greece (30,000) and Norway (10,000). In the United Kingdom it has sold 110,000 copies. Celine performed this song five nights a week during her show "A New Day..." at the Colosseum of the Caesars Palace in Las Vegas, USA and released it on the "Live In Las Vegas - A New Day..." DVD in December 2007. In October 2008, "A new day has come" was included on "My Love: Essential Collection" greatest hits. A rare single´s cover, leaked to the internet. However the project never was marketed.

"I´m alive" is the second hit single from "A New Day Has Come", released on August 12, 2002.
The song was written and produced by Kristian Lundin and Andreas Carlsson, who already worked with Celine in 1999 on "That´s the Way It Is". "I´m alive" was also featured in the "Stuart Little 2" movie. "I´m alive" became a worldwide hit, hitting top 10 in many countries. It was certified platinum in Belgium (50,000) and gold in France (250,000). For radio release, the song was slightly re-worked by Humberto Gatica. Epic Records moved forward with the "Humberto Gatica" version as the main version. His version was released on the "Stuart Little 2" soundtrack as well as promotional and commercial CD singles. The original version appears on the album of "A New Day Has Come". Celine performed "I´m alive" five nights a week during her show "A New Day..." at the Colosseum of the Caesars Palace in Las Vegas, USA. It was released on the "A New Day... Live In Las Vegas" CD in 2004 and "Live In Las Vegas - A New Day..." DVD in 2007. The song became a part of the "Taking Chances Tour" set list and was performed by Celine in a new remix version. Although in October 2008 album version of "I´m alive" was included on "My Love: Essential Collection", the new remix by Laurent Wolf was released to promote it in France. Later, in January 2009 another promotional remixes were made by Maurice Joshua for the U.S. clubs. They entered the Hot Dance Club Play chart the next month at number 48 and peaked at number 35.

"Aun Existe Amor" was released as a promotional single in September 2002 in the United States, from the album "A New Day Has Come".
"Aun Existe Amor" is the Spanish version of the song "L´amour existe encore" (meaning "Love still exists") released as a single from the album "Dion Chante Plamondon" in 1991. Ignacio Ballesteros-Diaz wrote spanish lyrics for this song. A rare single´s cover, leaked to the internet. However the project never was marketed.

"Goodbye´s (The saddest Word)" is the third and last commercial single from "A New Day Has Come", released on November 18, 2002.
The song was written and produced by Robert John "Mutt" Lange, who already worked with Celine in 1999 on "If walls could talk". Lange and his then-wife, country singer Shania Twain did the backing vocals. Lyrically, the song speaks about motherly love and fear of losing one´s mother. The European version of the single included "All because of you", which could be found only here and on the special limited edition of "A New Day Has Come" from November 2002. The single featured also a duet with Anastacia on "You shook me all night long", taken from the "VH1 Divas Las Vegas" CD/DVD released in October 2002. In October 2008, "Goodbye´s (The saddest Word)" was included on the European version of "My Love: Ultimate Essential Collection" greatest hits.

"At last" is a 1941 song written by Mack Gordon and Harry Warren for the musical film "Orchestra Wives". It was covered by Celine for the album "A New Day Has Come". Her version was produced by Humberto Gatica and Guy Roche, and released as a promotional single in the United States on December 9, 2002.
However, there was no music video made for the song. It was also the last single released from the "A New Day Has Come" album. "At last" peaked at number 16 on the Hot Adult Contemporary Tracks. A live version of this song was included on the "A New Day... Live In Las Vegas" album in 2004, as Celine performed it for four years during her "A New Day..." show in Las Vegas, USA. The promotional single contains one song: "At last".

A rare single´s cover of "Rain, tax (It´s inevitable)" leaked to the internet around October 2002. Maybe it was supposed to be released as a promotional single in the USA. Although there´s no official single released for the song "Rain, tax (It´s inevitable)". The track was written by Terry Britten and Charlie Dore.

The song titled "The greatest reward", originally was supposed to be released as a single by Columbia from the album "A New Day Has Come" in 2002, but never was marketed. However the single´s cover, titled simply "Greatest reward", leaked to the internet. It supposed to include 5 versions of the song including the original French version called "L´envie d´aimer", performed live by Celine in duet with Daniel Levy in November 2002. The song is an adaptation of "L´envie d´aimer" from the French musical "The Ten Commandments", performed originally by Daniel Lévi only. On January 29, 2008, Legacy Recordings released "A New Day Has Come" as a new collector´s edition with bonus DVD. The CD contains 16 tracks from the North American version of the album, including the extended version of "The greatest reward". Anyway, there was no music video made for the song.

The "A new day has come" music video was directed by Dave Meyers and premiered in March 2002. It was shooted in West Palm Beach, USA. The music video features people from the different cultures living through a day interspersed with Celine singing among the clouds and later on a beach.

The music video for the single "I´m alive", was directed by Dave Meyers and it was shooted between May 24 and 25, 2002 at the Universal Studios in Los Angeles, USA and premiered in June 2002. This first version of the music video, features Celine singing inside a toy plane (driven by Stuart from the "Stuart Little 2" movie), and then on a rooftop with a child. This version also features other movie scenes. Footage from the making of the music video was included on the bonus DVD called "One Year... One Heart" released in June 2004 on some editions of the album "A New Day... Live In Las Vegas".

It was premiered in November 2002. It features Celine writting a letter for her mother, driving a Chrysler car and singing on a bed. Short footage from the recording sessions of the album "One Heart" were included on the music video.

In 2006, a second version of the music video of "Goodbye´s (The saddest Word)" leaked to the internet, including never before seen footage. This unreleased version was also directed by Chris Applebaum in October 2002 but shows more Celine sexier scenes. It features Celine taking a shower. Some lyrics near the end of the song were omitted and/or altered.
