...> About The Album
"Falling Into You" was listed by the National Association of Recording Merchandisers in their Definitive 200 Albums of All Time as the 97th most influential and popular album in history. A 3CD set edition with the albums: "Let´s Talk About Love", "Falling Into You" and "A New Day Has Come", was released in October 2007. Later, it was repacked and released in a reusable gift box on September 29, 2009, titled "The Collection". "Falling Into You" presented Celine at the height of her popularity, and showed a further progression of her music. In an attempt to reach a wider audience, the album combined many elements: ornate orchestral frills and African chanting, and instruments like the violin, Spanish guitar, trombone, the cavaquinho, saxophone and supreme string arrangements by Paul Buckmaster created a new sound. The singles encompassed a variety of musical styles: the title track and "River deep, mountain high" (a Tina Turner cover) made prominent use of percussion instruments; "It´s all coming back to me now" (a remake of Jim Steinman´s song) and a remake of Eric Carmen´s "All by myself" kept their soft-rock atmosphere, but were combined with the classical sound of the piano; and the maudlin ballad, "Because you loved me", written by Diane Warren, served as the theme to the 1996 film "Up Close & Personal". The song was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Song in 1996, as well as four Grammy Awards. Celine performed at both ceremonies. The album included also Carole King´s "(You make me feel like) A natural woman" and Marie Claire D´ubaldo´s "Falling into you". "If That´s what it takes", "I don´t know" and "Fly" are the English adaptations of songs from the album "D´eux". Celine´s status on the world stage was further solidified when she was asked to perform "The power of the dream" at the opening ceremonies of the 1996 Summer Olympics. She sang in front of more than 100,000 people around her, in addition to over three and a half billion of TV viewers from their homes. Celine gave away the money she received for the occasion with a little extra to the Canadian team, to support Canadian athletes. The song was included on some limited editions of "Falling Into You" in Asia and Australia. In the United States, the song was included as the B-Side to the single "It´s all coming back to me now". In 2008, the song was included on Celine´s greatest hits album "My Love: Essential Collection". Celine went on the "Falling Into You Tour" to support the album. In February 1996, Celine announced the launch of her "Falling Into You Tour" in support of a new album. Celine and her band toured Australia, Canada, United States, and many countries in Europe and Asia. In all, the tour lasted more than a year, with 149 shows in 17 different countries. The sold out tour began on March 18, 1996 in Perth, Australia and continued to major cities around the world. It ended on June 26, 1997 in Zürich, Switzerland. In June 1997, Celine toured the biggest stadiums in Europe and sang before huge crowds ranging from 35,000 to 70,000 people.

...> Chart Success
"Falling Into You" remains one of the best-selling albums in history, with over 32 million copies sold worldwide. In the United States, it debuted at number 2 with 193,000 copies sold in its first week. It reached the number 1 position in its 28th week, selling 132,000 copies. The following week the album sold 130,500 copies, staying at number one. On its 31st week, it climbed back to the top with 136,000 copies sold. With this, the album spent 3 unconsecutive weeks at the top. "Falling Into You" achievements are notable as it is one of only five albums to remain in the top 10 of the Billboard 200 for one full year, spending 59 consecutive weeks in the top 10. Due to its incredible staying power on the chart, it was the third best-selling album of 1996 and also 1997, on the Billboard´s year end charts. It was certified diamond, and later 11x platinum by the RIAA, for shipping 11 million copies in the U.S. (10,785,000 copies sold according to Nielsen SoundScan). In Europe, "Falling Into You" topped the European Top 100 Albums chart and after selling 9 million copies, it was certified 9x platinum by the IFPI. Only two other albums have matched the figure with nine platinum awards, including Celine´s "Let´s Talk About Love" and The Beatles´ "1". In the United Kingdom, the album debuted at number 1 position and after selling 2,100,000 copies it was certified 7x platinum. Also in Germany "Falling Into You" has sold 1,250,000 copies and was certified 5× gold. Though it just debuted on #24, it could stay in the chart for 89 weeks, being the longest-remaining album in the German Albums Chart of her whole career. The album reached its highest position in its 37th week on that chart, #5. The albums has sold also over 1 milion copies in Canada, France, Japan and Australia, where Celine became one of only six acts who achieved this. "Falling Into You" was awarded with diamond in Canada and France, million in Japan, and 12x platinum in Australia. It was the second best-selling album in 1996 in France, while "D´eux" was the fourth and "Live À Paris" tenth, making Celine the only artist in history to have three number 1 albums and three albums in the tenth best-selling ones in a year-end chart in that country. "Falling Into You" replaced "D´eux" on the top of the French chart, staying at number 1 in France for five weeks. Other countries where the album reached number 1 include: Netherlands (12 weeks at the top), Belgium Wallonia (8 weeks), Norway (7 weeks), Switzerland (6 weeks), Australia (4 weeks), New Zealand (3 weeks), Canada (1 week), Austria (1 week), Sweden (1 week) and Greece. "Falling Into You" won three Grammy Awards, including a Grammy Award for Album of the Year and Best Pop Vocal Album, as well as various awards all over the world. On April 17, 1997 in Monaco, Celine was the big winning star of the World Music Awards ceremony. She won 3 awards: Best-selling Canadian female singer, Best-selling artist (all categories altogether) and Best-selling Pop artist. They announced sales of 25 million for 1996, which was the second year in a row Celine sold more than 20 million copies worldwide. During the ceremony, she sang "Call the man" with a 30-voice gospel choir. Celine was also nominated for one Academy Award for Best Original Song (to Diane Warren) with "Because you loved me" (1997). She was also nominated for three more Grammy Awards for Record of the Year (with "Because you loved me", Best Female Pop Vocal Performance (for "Because you loved me" and Song of the Year (to Diane Warren), also for "Because you loved me". Celine was also nominated for two American Music Awards for Favorite Female Artist Rock/Pop and Favorite Adult Contemporary Artist.
...> Critical Reception
"Falling Into You", upon its release, received generally favorable reviews from most music critics. Some reviews were mixed, such as Dan Leroy´s review, which stated "Falling Into You" was not very different from her previous work. A couple of other critics, namely Stephen Holden of The New York Times and Elysa Gardner of Los Angeles Times, wrote that the album was formulaic, and there was a lack of emotional connection to the songs. However, other critics such as Chuck Eddy and Daniel Durchholz praised the album as a whole, stating that it was "compelling", "passionate", "stylish", "elegant", and "remarkably well-crafted". Allmusic gave the album a favorable review, which said: "Although the album is formulaic, it´s a well-executed, stylish, and catchy formula, accentuating her natural vocal charm. Dion shines on ballads like Because you loved me and mock epics like Jim Steinman´s It´s all coming back to me now. Between those two peaks, she tackles dance-pop and love songs with grace; that effortless elegance saves the mediocre material on the album from being tedious. Though there are a couple of weak tracks, Falling Into You is a remarkably well-crafted set of adult contemporary pop and Dion´s best album".

THE SINGLES
...> "Falling into you"
"Falling into you" is a 1994 single by Argentine singer Marie-Claire D´Ubaldo, which was her biggest hit. A Spanish version, called "Y caigo un poco más", was also recorded. The song subsequently became the title track from Celine´s 1996 hit album "Falling Into You", released as the first single in Europe and Australia on February 19, 1996. In other parts of the world "Because you loved me" was released as the lead track. A double A-side single with "Falling into you" and "Le ballet" (from the album "D´eux), was released by Columbia in Canada.

Celine revealed the recording process of this song in her authorized biography "Celine Dion: For Keeps": "I was not satisfied with the first recording we made with Falling into you. This is a song with many nuances, with half-tones. I found the arrangements were too violent, my voice didn´t flow enough. Everybody, however, the technicians, the authors, even David and Rene, seemed satisfied. I said nothing. But Rene felt that I wasn´t happy... He asked me what was wrong. I explained it to him. He seemed surprised. Then I hummed him Falling into you describing after every time the arrangements which I was imagining. He quickly agreed with me. He seemed amazed, as if he just discovered something... I called the director and the engineer to explain how I was feeling my song, what kind of changes. They all agreed and were happy, they said it to me... This song marked a step of my emancipation as an artist... I was becoming a mature, grown-up, autonomous artist... So we came back in studio and we recorded Falling into you again. It never became a big song for the stage; it is too sweet, too subtle to move a crowd. But it is, in my opinion, one of the thrillest songs on the album Falling Into You. And I love the lyrics...". The final arrangement used on Celine´s version uses an identical backing track to D´Ubaldo´s original version. The maxi-single included "Le ballet", which was released as promotional single in France, earlier the same year. "Falling into you" reached number 1 in Spain and in Greece, and became a top 10 hit in Norway (number 8) and in the UK (number 10). The single has sold 170,000 copies in the UK and 165,000 in France, where it remains undercertified (should be silver). Celine performed this song live during her "Falling Into You Tour". "Falling into you" became a part of the Australian edition of "All The Way… A Decade Of Song" greatest hits in 1999, "The Collector´s Series, Volume One" compilation in 2000 and the European version of "My Love: Essential Collection" greatest hits in 2008.

"Because you loved me" was written by Diane Warren as a tribute to her father for his encouragement. It was produced by David Foster and featured in the film "Up Close & Personal". The B-sides of the European single included unreleased at that time songs: "The power of the dream", "To love you more" and "Sola otra vez". ...> "It´s all coming back to me now"
"It´s all coming back to me now" is a power ballad, written by Jim Steinman. The song was the first on Celine´s album "Falling Into You". It was released in CD single, cassette single and vinyl single on July 29, 1996.
Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket
Steinman produced the track, with Steven Rinkoff and Roy Bittan as co-producers. Bat out of Hell and Meat Loaf collaborators Todd Rundgren, Eric Troyer, Rory Dodd, Glen Burtnick and Kasim Sulton provided backing vocals. Two editions of the CD single, never were marketed. In 2008, "It´s all coming back to me now" was included on Celine´s greatest hits compilation "My Love: Essential Collection". Live performances can be found in the "A New Day... Live In Las Vegas" and Taking Chances World Tour . The Concert" albums. The song attracted generally positive reviews. The Calgary Sun stated: "...is undoubtedly the highlight of her English-language recording career. Dion´s over-the-top vocals soar and swoop around Steinman´s epic, ostentatious arrangement. Not surprisingly, everything else that follows... pales in comparison". Toronto´s Eye Weekly said Steinman´s "fatal absence from the last Meat Loaf record is finally justified here", and The Miami Herald said "Dion knocks a couple out of the ballpark... [the song] features seven minutes of Wagnerian bombast, thunderclap piano chords and emoting that would wither an opera diva. Sure, it´s over-the-top but it´s passionate and musical". Some other reviews were less enthusiastic. After labelling Celine "a Madonna-meets-Meat Loaf vocal freak", The Vancouver Sun called the song "intensely self-indulgent, pompously self-important and mediocre beyond belief, the song just never ends". The Ottawa Sun called it 'turgid', while The Toronto Sun, coincidentally, said that it "sounds like a Meat Loaf reject". According to the Sunday Times, Andrew Lloyd Webber told Steinman he thought this song "the greatest love song ever written", and on hearing the Celine version reportedly said: "This will be the record of the millennium". Several versions of the CD single were released in 1996. They featured the songs "The power of the dream", "Le fils de Superman", "Fly", "To love you more", and a live version of "Where does my heart beat now"; a cassette and 7" vinyl version were also released. Another CD contained several dance remixes, although these attracted negative reviews. While praising its original form, Allmusic said that 'as a dance song, it misses the mark... the final 'Moran' mix is a little better [than the other dance mixes] because the vocals don´t pop up until three and a half minutes into the song'. Two rare single´s covers leaked to the internet. However these projects were never marketed.

A performance from her 2008-2009 "Taking Chances Tour" can be found on the "Taking Chances World Tour - The Concert" DVD/CD. ...> "(You make me feel like) A natural woman"
"(You make me feel like) A natural woman" a 1967 single released by American soul singer Aretha Franklin on the Atlantic label. The song was recorded by Celine Dion and released as a promotional single on October 23, 1995 in the United States, Canada and Australia. It was featured on a tribute album to Carole King, called "Tapestry Revisited: A Tribute To Carole King" from October 24, 1995. Later, Celine included this track on most versions of her 1996 album "Falling Into You". So "(You make me feel like) A natural woman" is considered another single from this album.

...> "It´s all coming back to me now" [ version 1 ]
Nigel Dick directed the music video, with Simon Archer as cinematographer and Jaromir Svarc as art director. It was shot between June 29 and July 3, 1996 in the summer palace of the Austrian Emperor, Ploskovice and Barandov Studios, Prague, Czech Republic; it was later released in July 1996. Castle Ploskovice in Ploskovice supplied the exterior of the gothic mansion. This is the single version of the music video (about 6:00 in length). It was included on Celine´s 2001 DVD video collection "All The Way… A Decade Of Song & Video". The video opens with a man dying in an explosive motorcycle crash, after lightning strikes a tree down in his path. Celine´s character is haunted by her lover´s image, which she sees through a mirror, and images of them together through picture frames. There are stylistic similarities to Russell Mulcahy´s video for Steinman´s "Total eclipse of the heart", to the extent that Slant calls Dick´s video an update. Celine is seen running alone through a dark, gothic mansion, with wind blowing through the open windows.

A second version was made for the UK market with the same white t-shirt scenes but adding footage of a young couple in love at Christmas times, instead of scenes from Celine´s concert. This was made for the album version. It was premiered in December 1996 during Christmas on VH1 channel in USA.

It was shown in selected countries.

During the photo session for the album "Falling Into You", Celine was filmed singing songs from that album. Footage from this session with fragments of Celine singing "All by myself" was used on the music video of that song. Although there was no official music video made for "(You make me feel like) A natural woman", there is a rare video with Celine singing the song, taken from the same photo session for the album "Falling Into You". Maybe it was made for promotion only.
