THE ALBUM
"D´eux" (meaning "Of Them" or "About Them" or "From Them") is an album by Celine Dion, released on March 27, 1995. It was re-named as "The French Album" in the United States. It is Celine´s 17th French-language album and 20th in total. "D´eux" is the best-selling French-language album of all time, with sales of 10 million copies worldwide.
...> About The Album
The album was written and produced by popular French singer and songwriter Jean-Jacques Goldman. "D´eux" includes successful hit singles: "Pour que tu m´aimes encore" and "Je sais pas". A song called "Vole" was dedicated to Karine, Celine´s niece who had died of cystic fibrosis. These three songs were recorded later in English as "If that´s what it takes", "I don´t know" and "Fly" respectively, and included on Celine´s next album "Falling Into You" in 1996. "D´eux" was promoted in April 1995 with one-hour TV special. Celine did also the "D´eux Tour" to support the album. The show at the Le Zénith theatre in Paris, France was recorded and released as "Live À Paris". A promotional copy of the album was issued with alternate artwork in France. The album "D´eux" and the leadoff single "Pour que tu m´aimes encore" won many awards, including Juno Awards, Félix Awards and Victoires de la Musique. Celine received also the Medal of Arts and Letters from France´s Minister of Culture recognizing her status as the Best Selling French-language Artist in History. To celebrate the 15th anniversary of "D´eux", Legacy Recordings released in November/December 2009 in Europe and Canada "D´eux - 15th Anniversary Edition". It includes the CD with original album versions plus three demos out of personal archives of Jean-Jacques Goldman ("Pour que tu m´aimes encore", "Le ballet", "J´irai où tu iras") and two instrumental versions of "Vole" and "Pour que tu m´aimes encore". It also contains an opendisc access to unpublished photographs of the cover sessions and listen to an alternate version of "J´attendais" with different lyrics by Goldman. The bonus DVD includes the Sonia Benezra´s TV special "Spécial Dimanche" from 1995, distributed exclusively in Quebec, Canada where Celine interprets "Je sais pas", "J´irai où tu iras" in duet with Goldman, "Les derniers seront les premiers", "Pour que tu m´aimes encore" and "Vole". In between the songs, there are interviews with Celine and Goldman. It also includes four music videos: "Pour que tu m´aimes encore", "Les derniers seront les premiers", "J´attendais" and "Je sais pas". "D´eux - 15th Anniversary Edition" also includes a booklet of 40 pages in a double digipack. It includes two previously unpublished texts by Goldman, one of 1995 to launch the album, and the other he has done specially for "D´eux - 15th Anniversary Edition". There are also unpublished photographs of the sessions for the cover, and reproduction of the text manuscript of Goldman´s "Pour que tu m´aimes encore". The digital version of "D´eux - 15th Anniversary Edition" contains audio tracks only and was released in most European countries on November 24, 2009 and on December 1, 2009 in Canada. Many songs from "D´eux" were featured on the 2005 greatest hits album "On Ne Change Pas". Celine´s 2007 CD title "D´elles" refers to "D´eux", being the specifically feminine version.

...> Chart Success
"D´eux" is the best-selling French-language album of all time, with sales of 10 million copies worldwide. In France, "D´eux" was certified diamond and after selling over 4,412,100 copies, it became the best-selling album ever in that country. It spent 44 consecutive weeks at the top of the French chart and 137 weeks on the chart in total, breaking sales records. When Celine´s next album, "Falling Into You" was released in 1996 it debuted at number 2 on the French chart, since the first slot was still being occupied by "D´eux". Celine was also the most-played act on the French radio in 1995, as well as the best-selling recording artist. In Belgium Wallonia, no other album has spent as long as 37 weeks at number 1, nor 131 weeks on the entire chart, since "D´eux". In Switzerland, it topped the chart for five weeks, and in Belgium Flanders for 4 weeks. "D´eux" was certified 7x platinum in Canada, 6x platinum in Belgium, and 4x platinum in Switzerland. Although a French-language album, "D´eux" charted and was certified also in many non-French speaking countries such as the United Kingdom, where it peaked at number 7, setting a record for a French release. It has sold 250,000 copies there and Celine became the first and only artist who achieved UK gold certification with a French-language recording. Later, she repeated this success with "S´il Suffisait D´aimer" (1998). Even in the United States the album has sold 242,000 copies, according to Nielsen SoundScan. "D´eux" was also certified platinum in the Netherlands, Poland, and gold in New Zealand. Other top 10 positions in non-Francophone countries include: number 1 for two weeks in the Netherlands, number 2 in Portugal, number 5 in Denmark, and number 9 in Sweden. On the European Top 100 Albums, "D´eux" reached number 3 and was certified 8x platinum by the IFPI.
...> Critical Reception
Jon O´Brien from Allmusic said "Her first French-language album following the huge commercial success of The Colour Of My Love, 1995´s D´eux was Dion´s return to her native roots. Produced by Jean Jacques Goldman, her 20th studio album went onto become the biggest-selling French language release of all time...". And Stephen Thomas Erlewine, also from Allmusic, said "is a well-constructed and entertaining adult pop record - there may not be too many distinctive songs, but on the whole, it sounds quite nice".

THE SINGLES
...> "Pour que tu m´aimes encore"
"Pour que tu m´aimes encore" (in English: "So that you love me again") is the first hit single from album "D´eux". It was released on March 13, 1995 in Francophone countries and in September 1995 in other European countries. In Canada it was a radio only release. The song was also released in Japan in October 1996.
According to Celine, herself, "Pour que tu m´aimes encore" is the biggest song of her French career. "Pour que tu m´aimes encore" was written and produced by Jean-Jacques Goldman and became one of Celine´s signature songs. The lyrics tell of a woman who is emotionally dependent on a partner that has left her for another and they culminate in a desperate plea itering that she would turn herself into gold so that he will love her again. "Pour que tu m´aimes encore" became a smash hit in France, where it topped the singles chart for 12 weeks, sold 955,000 copies (platinum award) and is currently the 107th best-selling single of all time in the country. It spent 15 weeks at the top in Belgium Wallonia and 4 weeks in Quebec. "Pour que tu m´aimes encore" also reached top 10 in the United Kingdom and Ireland, which was an exceptional achievement for a French song. According to Virgin17, the single has sold more than 4,000,000 copies, worldwide. The song received a Félix Award for Song of the Year, as well as an award from Trophée Radio France Internationale for "Conseil Francophone de la Chanson". The song also won an award by the Victoires de la Musique for Best Song of the Year. The song was later included in three of Celine´s albums, "Live À Paris", "Au Cœur Du Stade", and "Taking Chances World Tour - The Concert" (French edition). The song was also featured on three compilation albums including, "The Collector´s Series, Volume One", "On Ne Change Pas", and "My Love: Ultimate Essential Collection". The melody from the song was used in "If that´s what it takes" which featured on Celine´s 1996 album, "Falling Into You". Celine performed the song five nights a week during her show "A New Day..." at the Colosseum of the Caesars Palace in Las Vegas, USA as well as during her 2008-09 "Taking Chances Tour". She also performed the song at "Céline Sur Les Plaines", which was a concert for Quebec City´s 400th anniversary. In 2005, Celine recorded a live version with 500 choristers for the album "500 Choristes Avec...". "Pour que tu m´aimes encore" was covered in 2000 by Elsa Lunghini, Liane Foly and Hélène Segara on the number-on album "Les Enfoirés En 2000". Nigerian singer Funke Olayode recorded a Yoruba version re-entitled "To ba j´oun to gba" in 2001. It was also covered by the operatic pop group Il Divo in November 2005, on their second album "Ancora". In November 2006, the music producer Antonis Karalis released his debut worldwide single "To be continued" with the Greek version of "Pour que tu m´aimes encore", called "S´agapo sa trelos". The tune has a rock arrangement that combines baglamas and electric guitars. In May 2007, Elena Paparizou released her new single "Fos" with another Greek version of the song called "An esy m´agapas". The English-language version, "If that´s what it takes", was covered by Laura Branigan for her unreleased comeback album in 2004.

...> "Je Sais Pas"
"Je sais pas" (meaning "I don´t know") is the second and last commercial single from album "D´eux". It was released on October 2, 1995 in Francophone countries and in December 1995 in selected European countries. In Canada it was a radio-only release (July 1995).
The narrator of the song boasts that she is unafraid to face any number of tribulations and challenges of the body and spirit, but admits life without the one she loves just might be more than she could bear. Celine has stated that this is one of her favorites among her songs, because it reminds her of her feelings for husband Rene Angelil. "Je sais pas" was written and produced by Jean-Jacques Goldman and J. Kapler. An English version of this song, called "I don´t know" was featured on "Falling Into You". Live version of "Je sais pas" from "Live À Paris" was also released as a single, on May 19, 1997 in the Netherlands to promote that album. The song was featured on Celine´s greatest hits compilation "On Ne Change Pas". The live version was a part of two other albums: "Live À Paris" and "Au Cœur Du Stade". Celine also performed it during the French concerts of her 2008-09 "Taking Chances Tour". The audio and footage of this performance was included in the French edition of "Taking Chances World Tour - The Concert" CD/DVD. "Je sais pas" was a smash hit in France, where it topped the singles chart for seven weeks, selling 510,000 copies (should be certified platinum but it remains undercertified with silver award). It was also number 1 in Belgium Wallonia (for two weeks) and Quebec (four weeks). The 1995 studio version peaked at number 34 in the Netherlands. The 1997 live version from "Live À Paris" reached number 78.

...> "Destin"
"Destin" (meaning "Destiny") is a radio single from the album "D´eux". It was released in January 1996 in Canada. The track was written and produced by Jean-Jacques Goldman. No video was made for the song. "Destin" was featured later on Celine´s greatest hits compilation "On Ne Change Pas" (2005). A live version was included on her "Live À Paris" album, recorded during the "D´eux Tour". Celine performed the song during the Francophone concerts of her 2008-09 "Taking Chances Tour", included on the French edition of the CD/DVD "Taking Chances World Tour - The Concert", and during her historic performance in front of 250,000 spectators to celebrate Quebec´s 400th anniversary, which was included on "Céline Sur Les Plaines" DVD in 2008. The song was a radio hit in Quebec. It entered the Quebec Airplay Chart on January 20, 1996 and peaked at number 3, staying thirty seven weeks on the chart.

...> "Le ballet"
"Le ballet" is a radio single from the album "D´eux". It was released in January 1996 in France and was immediately a huge radio hit, ranking as the 6th most economically profitable song of 1996 in France.
"Le ballet" is a bluesy groove song, with percussive finger snaps, harmonica and electric guitar that shows Celine singing blues for first time. The song is an example of "D´eux" style that was influenced by continental pop, folk music, jazz and ´70s soul. Written and produced by Jean-Jacques Goldman this track is considered an example of Goldman´s handling of mature topics and feelings and is known for Celine´s imitations of instruments. Starting in her "D´eux Tour" in 1995, and featured on the "Live À Paris" album, she used an extended version of this song to introduce all her band members. She performed the song similarly on her "Falling Into You Tour". In 1996 a double A-side single with the songs: "Falling into you" and "Le ballet" (labeled as "Falling Into You - Le Ballet"), was released by Columbia in Canada. There was no video for the song made. It was also featured on some editions of Celine´s greatest hits compilation "On Ne Change Pas" in 2005.

...> "J´irai où tu iras"
"J´irai où tu iras" (meaning "I´ll go where you go") is a duet between Celine and Jean-Jacques Goldman from Celine´s "D´eux" album. It was released as a promotional single in Quebec in April 1996. The track was written and produced by Jean-Jacques Goldman. There was no video made for the song. Celine performed this song many times during her concerts and TV shows. She sang it as a live duet also with Garou, Luke Mervill and her band members. During the "D´eux Tour" and the "Let´s Talk About Love Tour" the singer/songwriter Jean-Jacques Goldman came on stage during the Paris concerts to sing the song together with Celine. She performed it during her 2008-09 "Taking Chances Tour" and during her historic performance in front of 250,000 spectators to celebrate Quebec´s 400th anniversary, which was included on "Céline Sur Les Plaines" DVD in 2008. She sang it in Quebec together with Nanette Workman. The song was featured on Celine´s greatest hits compilation "On Ne Change Pas" (2005). Live versions were a part of three other albums: "Live À Paris" (1996), "Au Cœur Du Stade" (1999), and "Taking Chances World Tour - The Concert" French edition (2010). The latter was performed with Marc Langis, the bassist in Celine´s band. "J´irai où tu iras" entered the Quebec Airplay Chart on May 11, 1996 and peaked at number 14. It stayed fourteen weeks on the chart. A weird 6" red vynil-single of with the title "J´irai où tu iras", was released in Russia in 1998. The single says "J´irai où tu iras" and features a photo of Celine and Jean-Jacques Goldman during the recording sessions for the "S´il Suffisait D´aimer" album, but it plays a live version of the song "Je sais pas", and the song isn´t completely on it. Texts are in Russian.
