...> About The Album
On this album, Celine worked with many different producers for this album, mainly on pop and rock songs. At the Juno Awards of 2008, Celine was nominated in categories: Artist of the Year, Album of the Year, Pop Album of the Year and Fan Choice Award. The next year, at the Juno Awards of 2009 her song "Taking chances" was nominated as a Single of the Year and again she was nominated in category Fan Choice Award. Four singles were released from the album as part of its promotion process. Celine covered "Taking chances" as the lead single from the album. The song was nominated for the Single of the Year at the Juno Awards of 2009. It was also voted one of the top 20 pop songs of 2007 by About.com. As of October 28, 2010, the digital single has sold 462,000 copies in total in the U.S. and peaked at number 54 on the Billboard Hot 100. "Eyes on me" is the second single from the album, released in the United Kingdom on January 7, 2008. The critics heavily compared the track to Shakira´s songs. "A world to believe in" is the third single (second in Japan) from the album. It was commercially released on "Ultimate Box", which includes 2 CDs and 3 DVDs.The single debuted at number 8 on the Japanese Oricon Singles Chart with 11,778 copies sold. Celine covered "Alone" for the album, it was released as the fourth single of the album. The song debuted in November 2007 at number 85 on the UK Singles Chart. After selling 12,535 copies, it entered the U.S. Bubbling Under Hot 100 Singles at number 24 and Canadian Hot 100 at number 57. Officially "Alone" debuted on radio in Sweden in December 2007. The next month it entered the Swedish Singles Chart, due to strong digital sales, and peaked at number 52. In October and November 2007, Celine started promoting "Taking Chances" in Europe (United Kingdom, France, Italy and Germany) and United States. To promote the album, Celine embarked on her "Taking Chances Tour". It was the eleventh worldwide concert tour by Celine. The tour marked the return of Celine after performing her groundbreaking show "A New Day..." in Las Vegas for five years. The tour visited Africa, Asia, Australia, Europe and North America. It is estimated to have grossed US$236.6 million in 2008, so it became one the highest grossing tours in 2008. In 2009, it grossed an additional US$42.6 million, bringing its total gross to US$279.2 million. "Taking Chances Tour" is the second highest-grossing tour of all-time by a solo artist, and tenth highest-grossing tour over all. The first single, "Taking chances" was written by Kara DioGuardi and David A. Stewart from Eurythmics, and produced by Grammy Award-winner John Shanks. It was recorded in April 2007. Shanks also produced five other songs on "Taking Chances". "Alone" is a power ballad written by Billy Steinberg and Tom Kelly, and originally recorded by American band, Heart. It became a worldwide hit in 1987. Celine´s cover version was produced by Ben Moody, ex-member of Evanescence. It was released as the second single in Europe and North America, and third in the United Kingdom. Moody also co-wrote and co-produced "This time", which is about breaking free from a partner´s abuse, an atypical subject for Celine´s songs. "Eyes on me" is a Middle Eastern-flavored song written by Kristian Lundin, Savan Kotecha and Australian singer Delta Goodrem, and produced by Lundin. It was released as the second single in the UK and third in some European countries. Kara DioGuardi also wrote and co-produced with Emanuel Kiriakou "Surprise surprise" for the "Taking Chances" album. She has already written few songs for Celine in the past, including "One heart". The latter was co-written and co-produced by John Shanks and Kara DioGuardi, and released as a single in 2003. John Shanks also produced five other songs on "Taking Chances". The new version of "A world to believe in", recorded as a duet with Yuna Ito was issued in January 2008 as the second single in Japan. Linda Perry wrote and produced two songs on "Taking Chances". "My love" was written especially for Celine, but "New dawn" is a gospel track originally recorded by Perry on her After Hours album. Celine worked also on two songs with R&B producers: American singer Ne-Yo co-wrote and co-produced "I got nothin´ left". He also co-wrote Beyoncé Knowles´ hit song "Irreplaceable" "Skies of L.A." was co-written by The-Dream and co-produced by Christopher 'Tricky' Stewart and Kuk Harrell. These three are responsible for Rihanna´s 2007 hit "Umbrella" among others. The melody of "A world to believe in" was re-composed and the Japanese lyrics were added for the film "Maboroshi no Yamataikoku", which stars Sayuri Yoshinaga. Celine re-recorded it for the movie, which premiered on November 1, 2008. The single and the soundtrack were released in Japan on October 22, 2008. The CD single contains live version of "My love" and "There comes a time", tracks form the "My Love: Essential Collection", released at the same time outside Japan. "Right next to the right one" was originally written and recorded by Tim Christensen in 2002 and became a hit in Denmark. Celine´s cover version was produced by Christopher Neil. Although not released as a single, it entered the Danish Singles Chart on November 23, 2007 at number 13, due to strong digital downloads. "That´s just the woman in me" is a blues-flavoured track recorded by Katrina and the Waves, written by Kimberley Rew in the 80s, which remained unreleased until 2003. Celine´s version was produced by John Shanks. "Map to my heart" and "The reason I go on" are two bonus tracks included on the Japanese CD and iTunes version of "Taking Chances". "Let me be your soldier" was also recorded during the "Taking Chances" sessions but was not included on the album. It was retitled "There comes a time" and included on the next project "My Love: Essential Collection". The album was released physically worldwide during the month of November 2007 in CD edition, featuring 16 tracks in the European edition and 18 tracks in Japan. On December 22, 2007, ITV aired "An Audience With Celine Dion" in the United Kingdom. The success of this television special lead to "That´s Just The Woman In Me". ...> Title And Cover
Before the album release, it was supposed to be titled "The Woman In Me" (in reference of one of the songs of the album, "That´s just the woman in me"). However the named was replaced by the title "Taking Chances" as the lead single of the album. Although, a rare CD cover of "The Woman In Me" with the "Celine" logo and a picture of Celine´s face (taken from the photo session for the album "D´elles") leaked to internet. Maybe a fan´s creation or not, the cover is nice.

...> Chart Success
According to IFPI, the album "Taking Chances" had shipped 3.1 million copies by the end of 2007, becoming the 19th best selling album that year while released in November. To date, it has sold over 4 million copies worldwide. It is certified gold in many countries, and platinum or multi-platinum in many others. The success of the album is particularly remarkable in Canada where it reached number 1 on the chart with the biggest first week sales of 2007 (80,000). It also became the best-selling album in Canada that year and was certified 4x platinum. In the United States, "Taking Chances" debuted at number 3 with sales of 214,556 copies and has sold 1,067,236 copies in total. It was certified platinum by the RIAA. "Taking Chances" reached top 10 in many countries, including number 1 position in Canada, Switzerland, South Africa, on the European Top 100 Albums and the U.S. Billboard Top Internet Albums charts.
...> Critical Reception
Upon its release, the album received mixed to average reviews from most music critics, based on an aggregate score of 53/100 from Metacritic. Stephen Thomas Erlewine from Allmusic rated it 3 stars and said that "Taking Chances" "It´s an album of its time: it offers extravagance in the guise of self-help, which can be alluring in doses-especially those bizarre blues-rockers-but it´s just too much of a very expensive yet not particularly tasteful thing". The Billboard review said that: "Packing an emotional wallop, chances should quash critics who insist that Dion´s voice is stainless steel". Bill Lamb of About.com rate the album three-stars out of five, and said: "listening to 16 consecutive songs can be an endurance test for even the most ardent Celine fan. 14 of the songs here suffer, to various degrees, from leaning to the ordinary or seeming to lack in inspired artistic fire. However, they are sandwiched by 2 brilliant tracks that, sadly, give a hint of what Taking Chances might have been". Sarah Rodhman from the Boston Globe commented that: "Are chances taken? Not many, but there are rewards if you´re willing to enjoy Dion´s precise vocalizing and the hooky songs". The Entertainment Weekly review saw that: "It´s cool that Dion can mimic everyone from Shakira to Sam Phillips... but her appalling Janis Joplin impression is a chance too far". Sal Cinquemani from Slant opined that: "The laborious 16-track record purportedly finds the queen of adult contemporary-turned-Vegas attraction taking chances by modernizing her treacly power ballad sound with lots of overdubbed guitars and of-the-moment collaborators". The Amazon review was positive, saying that: "As far as standard Celine fare goes, in fact, chances is likely her strongest non-French outing since 2002´s A New Day Has Come, nobody unfolds a lyric with more care or nuance". The NOW review, expressed that: "The album is also comfortably ignorant of the times. With its feathery production and common pop arrangements, it could have come out in 1996". Edna Gundersen from USA Today said that: "With chances, the diva seems to be stretching artistic muscles, yoga-style not aerobically, and seeking an escape from expectations". Ashante Infantry from Toronto Star conclued that: "Taking Chances, Dion´s 10th album, finds her doing just that. With an obvious reach for contemporary radio, Dion padded the efforts of longtime collaborators with in-the-now hitmakers: Ne-Yo, Linda Perry and Ben Moody, who co-wrote the self-empowering anthem This Time about an abused woman breaking free. The result is an edgier rock sound that won´t alienate loyal fans, but may engage some new ones".

The lyrics "Walk with me, like lovers do/Talk to me, like lovers do" are sampled from The Eurythmics´ song "Here comes the rain again". On October 27, 2007 Celine appeared on the fourth series of the British talent contest, "The X Factor", as a mentor to the show´s contestants. She also performed "Taking chances" on the live show which was the world exclusive debut and her first UK performance for five years. Later, on November 18, 2007 she performed the song live at the American Music Awards in Los Angeles, USA. "Taking chances" became also a part of the "Taking Chances Tour" set list. The audio and footage of this performance was included in the "Taking Chances World Tour: The Concert" CD/DVD. As of October 28, 2010, the digital single has sold 462,000 copies in total in the U.S. and peaked at number 54 on the Billboard Hot 100. On November 17, 2007 the song peaked on the UK Singles Chart at number 40. The single was successful on the U.S. Hot Dance Club Play chart, peaking at number 1 and becoming Celine´s second song to do so, after "Misled" in 1994. It reached also the top position on the Canadian Adult Contemporary Chart, and was a top 10 hit in Denmark, Italy, Switzerland, France, and Canada where it was certified gold for selling over 20,000 digital downloads. "Taking chances" also peaked at number 6 on the U.S. Hot Adult Contemporary Tracks, giving Celine ownership of the most top 10 hits at the format with 21 during the last two decades. On CBS channel in USA, Celine´s version of "Taking chances" was featured as a theme music for the promotional trailers for "Moonlight" TV series. It was later used in 2009 on the show "So You Think You Can Dance Canada" on the Top 20 performance show as a number choreographed by Stacey Tookey. In the episode, titled "Preggers", of the TV show "Glee", the character of Rachel, played by Lea Michele covered the song. The episode aired on September 23, 2009 on FOX channel. They also make a parody of the song´s videoclip, when after singing it at the hearing one of the judges says "wow", and then Rachel replies: "What´s next?". In the film "Superhero Movie", to raise the spirits of the Dragonfly, Stephen Hawking recites the "If there is one lesson my life can teach" lyrics. Dragonfly points out that they are "Celine Dion lyrics", to which Hawking replies "Whatever. It´s still true".

"Eyes on me" is the second single from the album "Taking Chances", released in the United Kingdom on January 7, 2008. "Alone" was released as the second single in the rest of Europe and North America instead.

The Middle Eastern-flavored song was written by Kristian Lundin, Savan Kotecha and Australian singer Delta Goodrem. Goodrem also provides backing vocals on the track produced by Lundin. The latter worked with Celine in the past on "That´s the way it is" and "I´m alive" among others. The critics heavily compared the track to Shakira songs. "Eyes on me" was remixed by Ashanti Boyz, whose latest work includes remixes for Jennifer Lopez tracks: "Do it well" and "Hold it don´t drop it". Celine performed this song during "An Audience With Celine Dion", which aired in the UK on ITV channel on December 22, 2007. She also performed a remix version featuring will.i.am from The Black Eyed Peas during her CBS special, "That´s Just The Woman In Me", which aired in the U.S. on February 15, 2008. However this version isn´t commercially available."Eyes on me" was released in the UK with virtually no promotion surrounding it in the media, leading to its peak position at number 113 on the UK Singles Chart. The song was used in a TV commercial for Celine´s fragrance "Sensational". In early June 2008, "Eyes on me" was released as a radio single in Poland to promote the "Taking Chances Tour". Later that month, the digital single was released on iTunes in several European countries. In October 2008, "Eyes on me" was included on the European version of "My Love: Ultimate Essential Collection". A live version was included in the "Taking Chances World Tour: The Concert" CD/DVD. Stephen Thomas Erlewine from Allmusic said that:"Celine tries to shimmy like Shakira on Eyes on me". Sarah Rodman from The Boston Globe opined, positively, that: "Eyes on me colors a bit outside the lines with an irresistibly wiggly, Eastern-flavored groove. (Shakira will kick herself for not getting it first)". Ashante Infantry from Toronto Star has also said that: "the 17-track disc also finds the Quebec native tempering her five octaves, exuding a urban pop bounce ("Eyes on me"), channelling her inner Shakira".

The Japanese title means "As long as you are with me". "A world to believe in" was written by Tino Izzo and Rosanna Ciciola, and produced by Grammy Award-winner John Shanks. The track was re-recorded in October 2007 as an English-Japanese duet with Yuna Ito, retitled as "あなたがいる限り: A world to believe in". Celine was impressed when she heard Ito´s cover of "My heart will go on", featured on the Japan only released tribute album "Tribute to Céline Dion" from September 26, 2007, and proposed the idea of the duet together. The song was also featured on Ito´s album, "Wish". "A world to believe in" follows Ikimono-gakari´s "Akaneiro no Yakusoku" to become the ninth LISMO cellphone service TV commercial song, aired from December 1, 2007 onwards. The single debuted at number 8 on the Japanese Oricon Singles Chart with 11,778 copies sold. In its second week it dropped to number 22 with 5,399 copies. After eight weeks the single has sold 24,105 copies in total. On the Oricon Daily Singles Chart the song peaked at number 6. "あなたがいる限り: A world to believe in" (U.S.A. mix) was included later on Celine´s greatest hits album, called "Complete Best", released on February 27, 2008. Yuna Ito supported Celine´s concerts in Japan, during her "Taking Chances Tour". Both artists performed their duet live on stage.
