THE ALBUM
"Celine Dion" is an eponymous album by Celine Dion, released on March 31, 1992. It is her second English album and 17th in total. It includes the Grammy and Academy Award winning song "Beauty and the beast".
...> About The Album
Celine´s real international breakthrough came when she paired up with Peabo Bryson to record the title track to Walt Disney Pictures animated film "Beauty And The Beast" (1991). The song captured a musical style that Celine would utilize in the future: sweeping, classical and soft rock influenced adult contemporary ballads with soft instrumentation. Both a critical and commercial smash, the song became her second United States top 10 hit, and also won the Academy Award for Best Original Song, Golden Globe Award for Best Original Song, Grammy Awards for Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal and Best Song Written for a Motion Picture, Television or Other Visual Media, and was nominated for Record of the Year and Song of the Year. That song was also the first single from "Celine Dion" album which had a soft rock influence that was combined with elements of soul and classical music. Due to the success of the lead-off single, the album was as well received. As with Celine´s earlier releases, the album had an overtone of love. Celine worked with a new team of writers and producers on her eponymous album. Five songs were written by Diane Warren. "With this tear" was a gift from Prince who wrote the song especially for Celine and offered it to her. The tracks were produced mainly by Walter Afanasieff, Ric Wake and Guy Roche. Thanks to "Celine Dion", the singer was nominated also for a Grammy Award for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance. By 1992, "Unison", "Celine Dion" and media appearances had propelled Celine to superstardom in the North America. She had achieved one of her main objectives: wedging her way into the anglophone market and establishing fame. Apart from her rising success, there were also changes in Celine´s personal life, as Rene Angelil would make the transition from manager to lover. However, the relationship was kept a secret as both feared that the public would find the twenty-six-year difference between their ages incongruous. The European version of "Celine Dion" included "Where does my heart beat now" as a bonus track. The album was re-released on September 7, 1992 in Australia with a bonus disc containing four songs which had been previously released as singles from "Unison". Celine did the "Celine Dion Tour" to support the album. "Send me a lover" was a "leftover" from the recording sessions of the "Celine Dion" album and it was released in 1994 on the charity compilation "Kumbaya" Album 1994.

THE SINGLES
...> "Beauty and the beast"
"Beauty and the beast" is the Oscar winning leading single from the Academy Award Best Picture nominated animated film "Beauty And The Beast" film, and the first hit single from "Celine Dion" album. It was performed in the movie by Angela Lansbury, and sung over the movie´s closing credits by Celine and Peabo Bryson. The Dion-Bryson single was released on November 16, 1991 in Canada, on December 30, 1991 in the United States and the next year in the rest of the world.
The song is a ballad about the love developing between Belle and the Beast. It was written by composer Alan Menken and late lyricist Howard Ashman. It was one of Ashman´s last works before he died of AIDS in 1991. During the film, "Beauty and the beast" is performed by Angela Lansbury as Mrs. Potts, and is heard whilst Belle and the Beast dance in the castle ballroom. Another version is performed by Celine and Peabo Bryson at the end of the film. This was also the version released on a CD single and is also included on Celine´s self-titled album (1992). Lansbury, Celine and Bryson all performed the song live on stage during the 64th Academy Awards ceremony. Celine and Bryson performed it also at the Grammy Awards in 1993. The song was included later on Celine´s greatest hits albums "All The Way… A Decade Of Song" (1999) and "My Love: Essential Collection" (2008). "Beauty and the beast" was successful on the charts around the world, becoming Celine´s first international hit. The single reached number 9 in the U.S. (number 8 on the Hot 100 Singles Sales and number 17 on the Billboard Hot 100 Airplay) and hit top 10 in Canada, New Zealand and the United Kingdom. It was certified gold in the U.S. for selling over 500,000 copies, and platinum in Japan (100,000 copies sold). Thanks to its success, the "Beauty And The Beast" soundtrack was certified 3x platinum in the U.S., for selling over 3,000,000 copies. "Beauty and the beast" won an Academy Award for Best Original Song in 1992, marking Menken and Ashman´s (posthumously) second win after the 1989 award for "Under the sea" from "The Little Mermaid". A couple of months before, it had also won the 1992 Golden Globe Award for Best Original Song. It also went on winning two Grammy Awards in 1993, for the Best Song Written for a Motion Picture, Television or Other Visual Media and the Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal. The song was also nominated for two other important Grammys: Record of the Year and the Song of the Year. In Canada, "Beauty and the beast" won a Juno Award for the Single of the Year.
