VOICE
Celine Dion is a powerful soprano whose vocal range has been variously reported as between three and five octaves. Her voice extends from F-sharp below middle C to F-natural (F#3 - F6), her highest note in belting voice is the F5. Describing her voice, The New York Times writes: "Ms. Dion... is a belter with a high, thin, slightly nasal, nearly vibratoless soprano and a good-sized arsenal of technical skills. She can deliver tricky melismas, produce expressive vocal catches and sustain long notes without the tiniest wavering of pitch. And as her hit duets have shown, she is a reliable harmony voice". Celine is often regarded as one of pop music´s most influential voices. In a countdown of the "22 Greatest Voices in Music" by Blender Magazine and MTV channel, she placed ninth (sixth for a female), and she was also placed fourth in Cove magazine´s list of "The 100 Outstanding Pop Vocalists". Upon her debut, many critics had welcomed her restrained vocal inflections, and she was praised for her technical virtuosity and intensity. As Charles Alexander of Time writes, "The power behind the song [...] is her bring-the-house-down voice, which turns an old, schmaltzy ballad into a soaring pop aria. That voice glides effortlessly from deep whispers to dead-on high notes, a sweet siren that combines force with grace". Stephen Thomas Erlewine of AllMusic writes that Celine is "a singer with a big, soaring soprano and a real knack for her chosen genre", and that she sing with "a natural vocal charm", "a effortless elegance". As her music progressed, however, Dion´s vocal performances came to resemble more closely those of her contemporaries, especially Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey, and she was heavily criticized for oversinging and for lacking the emotional intensity that once was a part of her earlier work. One critic noted that the emotion "seems to have been trained right out of her lovely voice", leaving her with "more voice than heart". Describing Celine´s voice and person, David Foster says "It´s no lie that I always describe Celine as the greatest voice I know, and yes she is still my favourite female singer. Apart from being an exceptional singer she is also a fantastic person. Listening to her sing in person is pretty much a religious experience". Timbaland says “Celine has such a beautiful, mesmerizing voice. She is so talented, I would love to work with her. I think we could create something that is a classic like she already is”. R. Kelly says "“I am an absolute, wouldn´t be embarrassed, chase-down-the-bus fan. Her voice is, like, not human. She´s so unique, you know her voice from a million miles away – from the first second you hear it. I think a gift from God like that is the coolest thing in the world”. Cher says "Celine is the best singer in the world. Nobody can out-sing her. She was on Divas once with Aretha Franklin and a whole bunch of other girls. She blew them all away. I was amazed. One time we were both at NBC and she did "Believe" for me. She did all the electronic effects with her voice. I would never sing on the same stage with her at the same time. The other girls have got great style, but as far as pipes go…". Jean Jacques Goldman says "Nowadays, Celine Dion is the biggest singer in the world. She became a superstar. When "D´Eux" was released, I helped her to be known in France. Now I don´t have nothing more to do". Thomas Mottola, Chairman of Sony Music, says "Celine is not only a world class artist and one of the best singers of all time... she is also one of the greatest people I know". And Kent Nagano, music director of the Montreal Symphony Orchestra, says "Is Alfred Brendel a pianist? Well, yes but he´s much, much more than a pianist. He´s a poet. He´s a writer. He´s a philosopher. Was Yehudi Menuhin a violinist? Yes, but he was much, much more than that - a humanitarian, a cultural ambassador. Celine Dion is at that highest quality level where to call her a singer is not enough. She is just simply an artist". On March 31, 1993 Celine Dion launched her second album in English entittled "Celine Dion" live at the famous Tv show "Tonight Show", with the slogan "Remember the name because you´ll never forget the voice".
